People generally like to say in Australia "Goodday how are you going", sounding like "Gidday howz it goiiiing?", Or male to male would be "G'day mate, howz it going?".
This doesn't mean "Hey what type of transport are you using?", this obviously means "Hello how are you?".
The default reply would be a form of; "Good thanks, how are you?", or in the mates way; "Good mate, and yourself?".
This dialog is used and almost all encounters, with known or unknown people to you. And the "mate" version really comes in handy when you forgot the person’s name.
It is a far more friendly way of greeting and really fits very well with Aussie culture and attitude.
Being used to the "Hey", or the "Hey how are you?", and giving mostly a quick reply with "good", or "good and you?", the aussie way takes some practice, but feels better at the end when completed successful.
Downsides though, besides the more open question, looking for a longer answer, it takes a bit of time all together, and many situations end up with half of the greeting or people not even listening to the answer.
Anyway, funnely enough.. there is also "G'day Wiki" :)
