I've done it.. just before I smashed my car i purchased the iPhone (if it was afterwards I prolly wouldnt just yet). My beloved w800i was hanging on to its last breaths, and has been of gr8 service for the last 3 years! but was cutting out on me whenever it moved or got touched. Time to move on.
As much as I tried to resist locking myself in on an Apple controlled environment, I just couldn't resist having this multimedia with mucho grande touchscreen reasonable smartphone. Also the plan I got offered for two years is not much more then my old costs on the w800i.
I found the little to un-tick box in the preferences for iTunes to let the program NOT control my music by copying all to the iTunes music folder, and that was a big peace of mind (preferences -> advanced -> copy files to iTunes ... ).
So i'm loving the 16Gb music capacity I now can take along.
I'm also loving the gazillions (aka a lot) of little and slightly bigger applications you can download, and the ease of installing them (very well manageable through iTunes).
I now got subscribed again and listening to many PodCasts ie DSC from Adam Curry... YAY!! , and even some Poker ones.
Besides some better graphics in games and some cool multiplayer games you can play, there are some very nifty tools available making the iphone a true swiss army knife of knowledge and accessible information - talk later more about apps -.
The phone functionality itself is basic near ok, but you can see Apple hasnt got the knowledge yet of building proper phone operating software. Many little unpleasant shortcuts and usability features I was used to with other phones are not available, and a big hurdle is the SMS short comings.
Not able to forward or store or do any other then just plain new or reply to text messages is very very silly and immature.
This also goes for handling contacts and eMail, as its very very basic.
I know Apple is selling MobileMe that should probably enhance some features of those areas, but Im not going to pay extra for now just for basic functionality.
I run into 2 other types of wishes that lead me to "Jailbreak only" iPhones, showing the 'FREE' world will prolly more for fill my needs, but I'm determined to use the iPhone to its full capacity within the set by Apple's boundaries for now. Besides I still have a fresh contract, and Jailbraking my iPhone can risk all warranties so a slip up could let Apple turn the phone in a very nice looking brick. I also want to fully explore the set ways that Apple gives you before I jump into the 'free world'.
The interface rulez.. and the finger swiping operating is just toooooo cooooool.. love it! Obviously you cant find the keys while not seeing the phone, so no more blind texting etc.
Just flicking through screens or zooming in etc is just fabulous and most of the times very quick.
Battery life is not so long but survivable, prolly due to lighting up the big screen every time, but it comes with car adapter and usb charger so charging is not a problem.
I will prolly share some more later about apps and revelations or hinders about my new friend, but so far i'm very satisfied with it. Gonna hit the Apps Store again to see if there is some new cool stuff out..
Cheers!
iPhone uPhone weallPhone something :P
