Parallels Desktop 3.0

Forget the previous post about setting Mac OS to read NTFS with the little plugin I talked about earlier. THE tool to run multiple operating system is besides obviously bootcamp, (comes with MacOS) is virtual machine software like PARALLELS or VMware Fusion.

parallels.jpg

Ive been working with Parallels now for a week running my XP installation done with bootcamp, and i am a very happy chap now.

Besides the easy way of grabbing and altering files on the NTFS partition, I can run now all my windows applications inside MacOS and visa versa in XP. It even has some support for OpenGL and DirectX to run a small selection of games through the Virtual machine (no LFS *Sigh*). My first revelation was working in MacOS in Photoshop and having my Winamp (i hate iTunes) streaming my fav tunes through Parallels as an application running in my "dock" (task bar). Next was the impressive switching from windowed view to full screen XP, bit like turning a cube (like switching users in MacOS).

You can run the apps in a VM window or set the apps to run coherence (as they belong to MacOS), and it has great support for USB devices, like external HD's and camera's etc.
It hasnt installed my build in webcam actually, missed that one doing skype through parallels, but that can run in MacOS self anyway.

Besides XP you can run many other operating systems like Linux distri's or Vista etc on multiple Virtual Machines.

Going to try VMware Fusion also, they say it has a lot more grunt (runs faster) then Parallels.. lets see about that.

Hot Apple

hotapple.jpg

The MacBook Pro (MBP) is HOT, ... no seriously its bloody hot! To the point you can't even use the keyboard without burning your fingertips.
First I thought, must be a XP problem on the MBP, but its a serious problem on both Operating systems, but yeah worse on XP.
Anyways, the way to attack this is in OSX is with smcFanControl, but under XP I haven't found a proper tool to manage the fans like in OSX.
The InputRemapper, comes with fancontrol but just doesnt do anything. So for now the only way to stay cool, is to use smcFanControl in OSX, set it to a higher fan level, reboot directly in XP without turning the power off, then the fans will stay at the RPM set in OSX. :(
It would be good if BootCamp will add this to its features when booting into XP.

Bloody Vodafone

vodafone_bloody.jpg
I am using Vodafone PrePaid, because I wanted to buy my own phone and most plans didnt suit me at that time, and I didnt know if they want to sell a plan to an Alien (non full resident). Till December 2006 everything was fine, but then "what they had announced tho" they killed the internet access.

I was using my internet access to download golf courses to my phone, so I would have the score card of the courses I played also on my phone.
After a round of golf you normally put your card in for the score so you cant really look back what u have done.
I was using Wireless18 to keep my data and score .. anyways.. getting sidetracked again, will tell about that another day.

So I wasnt a heavy data user any way, but on the pre-paid they had some kind of unlimited usage with a fair use policy attached, so that was great.
I also had SMS-text to every where around the globe, because I was using the 49 dollar Maxi Cap.
The 49 dollar Maxi Cap made pay EVERY MONTH 49 dollars, what was a bit annoying but gave 250$ of talk text and what eva.. It wasnt like you put 49 bucks on and you can sit on it as long as you want.. NO!, even when you never used it completely the 250 bucks OR even the 49 bucks you still had to put in new 49 bucks in order to continue using the phone.
I kept track if I went over just the last few months and I did in those months, so it wasnt stealing yet from me.

As I said they announced that they would kill the internet usage in December 2006 by text message, but they never said to me on text or mail or whateva.. WATCH OUT your overseas TEXT messages will be banned TOO, if they did they prolly hide it with a stupid commercial txt message at the top saying new promotions with your MaxiCap and then at the bottom no overseas texting, then I could have deleted it tho.. i'll keep that one open!

Obviously on NYE i tried to text my friends and relatives overseas to warn that 2007 had arrived in Sydney and it was coming their way FAST! :)
First tries I thought ok, the service could not be delivered due to the heavy usage of all texters.. but now I know it was because all PrePaid users got booted from that privilege.. grrr,..
First of all I am annoyed by this, as bloody Vodafone was changing their plans, and Im pretty sure that thousands of people like me couldn’t to the same I wanted.
That also means that Vodafone was missing out on mega pesos due to this fantastic move..
I went to the Vodafone store the other day to do some questioning, and the guy said well it isnt official yet but they are setting up PrePaid add-ons for Internet usage and for overseas texting! WHUT? that’s not how you do it, when u throw away old shoes please do it when you got proper new ones!!!!!

So here is my reason for not texting all of you, but lucky I had my site and e-mail already set and done.
Im now on for a plan, as the 49 bucks I used to spend on PrePaid with all services can easily give me a full plan with all shebang and a new phone.

Who wants a new phone, as I prolly going to stick with my w800i as with the 2 GB memory-stick and FM transmitter Im still a very happy camPER!

w800i

w800i.jpgI haven’t really posted how happy I am with my Sony Ericsson w800i, and now it is going to be replaced by Sony Ericsson due to a malfunction with the connector, I did miss my dear compadré in the mean time.

When I bought the phone, I immediately bought an extra 2 GB memory card. The 512 MB that default comes with the phone prolly is sufficient for many people, but I knew it aint going to be for me. (Ps through a good deal I've got another 2GB card here if ur interested! :)
The sound quality is awesome, and not surprising when Sony puts their Walkman logo on it! The equalizer brings even more sound improvements when needed. What I really like is that the default headphone cord with microphone for handsfree with the SE w800i phone connector doesnt have a silly SE branded headphone jack plug, no its a normal 3.5 jack!, that means u can use the handsfree cable with what ever headphone u like! The option to use the walkman without the phone roaming is also great, and gave me couple of good hours listening pleasure on my trip from Sydney to London with no problems, except a stupid British Airways flight hostess on the last bit from London to Amsterdam ordered me to shut the phone off completely, as I was interfering with the navigation systems.. haha even with the phone in flight mode.. yeah.. RIGHT, stupid cow! They had a little screw-up a couple of minutes before, and info got broadcasted over the complete aircraft radio that was meant for the cockpit only, they were looking for an escape cloggie, and found me.. pff!
sony-ericsson-W800i-f-fbe7.jpg
I had a look at the w900i when I was in the Netherlands, whom is the 3G sequal with bigger screen, but that one felt and looked to plastic for me.

The 2megapixel camera is fantastic and already has been of gr8 use to me, and even more functional is the light beam (flashlight) function.. awesome feature when you’re in the dark and need to find something!
I almost would say, give the phone some swiss army knife functions and bye bye letterman! :)

Ive use the GPRS for WAP and went like a breeze, and also ive used the GPRS with a Java application and had to set two times to allow connection before it worked. One time the application and I recon once for Java to use the connection.

The software navigation for a old Nokia and Motorola user is very simple to get used to. Although I've never used the Disk2phone software that comes with the phone, as I'm just chuckin all my files direct on the memory card i'm pretty sure it gives u waaaaaayyy more freedom then that crappy iTunes with iPod crap.
I havent used the outlook sync and the PC suite software yet, but I will soon.. so dont know much about that.
The bluetooth sharing files went also without any problems. And Ive BlueJackQ’d some ppl here.. (gosh here in Oz many leave their wireless internet open, but also masses leave their phones on with bluetooth.. lol.)

GPD_25262high_27_0_4001.jpgOk ok.. as i said it hasnt been all smooth sailing, I wanted to hook my phone up with the MMR-60, SE's FM-transmitter, so I could listen to my fav music or podcasts without headphone in the car wireless through the car stereo. Ive finally found an wholesale point (luckily i work for a IT reseller), and got the transmitter the next day but didnt work. Ive bought another FM transmitter and brought the first one to SE's service point here around the corner. The second one didnt work also, so that triggered the thought it must be the phone... I upgraded the firmware and the phone software, but no luck.
SE's service point tried to put in new connectors, also no luck.. the FM transmitters work on other phone's so I'm getting a new w800i in a couple of days.

My little help points:
- Don’t lower the quality of your MP3's to fit on the card.. EVER! whip out the money and buy bigger if u need to!
- When the album isn’t reachable direct but u can see the folder, and you get the "not used the correct software bla bla" message. Make a playlist of the song, that uses the file manager and then it works!
- If your albums or some of them don’t show up on the memorycard, you disconnected the phone or card to quickly form the PC! Or need to do the save removal hardware via your systray icons!

Hopefully gets fixed:
- The walkman software so far cant play a complete music mix in separate trax without the pause between the songs. I'm sure this is a software issue and if I have the correct opportunity I will report this.
- There are pictures out there that show the MMR-60 FM transmitter with an SE connector also on the bottom so u can still charge or use the connection to the phone while broadcasting... sadly this isn’t on the real version, and i've checked this is not just an Pacific/Asia issue.

The biggest +’s for me.
- The phone carries big functionality and is still rather small.
- Swappable Media, so unlimited storage if u really want..
- Very good sound quality.
- The option to default use whatever headphone you want and still being able to use the handsfree mic cord!
- Flashlight :) hooyah..

The biggest -’s for me.
- The camera slide is to easily openend, and sometimes opens when putting the phone in ur pocket making the lens uncovered... nice picture hey :)

Alvast bedankt!
